Please read these terms of use carefully before you start to use the website. By using our site, you indicate that you accept these terms of use and that you agree to abide by them. If you do not agree to these terms of use, please refrain from using our site.
Reliance on information posted & disclaimer
The content and materials contained on our site are provided for general information purposes only and do not claim to be or constitute legal or other professional advice and shall not be relied upon as such.
Although we make reasonable efforts to update the information on our site, we make no representations, warranties or guarantees, whether express or implied, that the content or materials on our site are accurate, complete or up to date.
We do not accept any responsibility for any loss which may arise from accessing or reliance on the information on this site and to the fullest extent permitted by English law, we exclude all liability for loss or damages direct or indirect arising from use of this site.
Information about us
www.essi.org is a site operated by Earth & Space Sustainability Initiative ("we"). We are registered in England and Wales under company number 14100205 and have our registered office at 126 New Kings Road, London, England, SW6 4LZ.
Access to our site is permitted on a temporary basis, and we reserve the right to withdraw or amend the service we provide on our site without notice. We will not be liable if for any reason our site is unavailable at any time or for any period.
In order to access the members area you will be required to register for an account and sign in on each occasion. You are responsible for keeping your login details secure and for all activity that takes place under your account. You must give us accurate registration information and keep it up to date.
Membership and subscriptions
Some parts of the site are available only to ESSI members. Membership is offered to individuals and organisations in the space sector. We may need to approve your account before access is granted.
Paid membership costs £250 per year plus VAT and is billed through our payment processor, Stripe. By subscribing you authorise us to charge the applicable fee to your payment method.
Automatic renewal. Membership renews automatically each year until you cancel, and your payment method will be charged the then-current annual fee on each renewal date. We may change the fee for future renewal periods and will give you reasonable notice before any change takes effect.
Cancellation. You may cancel at any time from the billing page in your account. Cancellation stops future renewals; your membership then remains active until the end of the period you have already paid for, after which it will not renew.
Refunds. If you are a consumer, you have a legal right to cancel within 14 days of purchase for a refund, unless you have asked us to provide access immediately and acknowledged that you lose this right once access begins. After the 14-day period the annual fee is non-refundable, and we do not provide pro-rata refunds for the unused part of a membership period.
We may suspend or terminate your membership if you breach these terms. Access to member-only content is licensed to you for your own and your organisation's internal reference only; you must not copy, redistribute, resell, publish or systematically extract that content, in whole or in part, without our written permission.
Terms of Sale
These Terms of Sale apply to paid ESSI memberships and, together with the "Membership and subscriptions" section above, govern your purchase.
What you are buying. An ESSI membership is an annual subscription giving you personal access to the members area — including the standards database and member-only content — for the subscription period. Membership benefits, features and content may be added to, changed or removed over time.
Price, VAT and payment. Membership costs £250 per year plus VAT, charged through our payment processor, Stripe. By subscribing you authorise us, via Stripe, to charge your payment method the applicable fee, including on each automatic renewal. You are responsible for any applicable taxes.
Fees are non-refundable. Membership fees are non-refundable. If you are a consumer, you have a statutory right to cancel within 14 days of purchase for a refund, unless you asked us to provide access immediately and acknowledged that you would lose that right once access began. After that period, and once access has been provided, fees are non-refundable and we do not give pro-rata refunds for the unused part of any membership period. Cancelling stops future renewals but does not entitle you to a refund of the current period. Nothing in this clause affects your non-excludable statutory rights.
The standards database and member content. The standards database, documents, presentations and other member content are provided for general information only, on an "as is" and "as available" basis. We do not warrant that they are accurate, complete, current or fit for any particular purpose, and they do not constitute legal, technical or other professional advice. Your membership grants a licence to access and use member content under our Content Licence; it is not a sale or transfer of the database, any content, or any intellectual property rights.
Availability. We aim to keep the members area available but do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free access, and we may add, change, suspend or withdraw content or features at any time.
Your account. You must provide accurate registration details, keep your login credentials secure, and not share your account or access. A membership is personal to the member (or, for an organisational membership, to the named organisation) and may not be transferred or resold without our written consent.
Suspension, termination and chargebacks. We may suspend or terminate your membership if you breach these terms; where we terminate for your breach, fees already paid are not refunded. Starting a chargeback for a charge you validly incurred is a breach of these terms and may lead to termination of your membership.
Consumer rights. Nothing in these Terms of Sale limits or excludes your statutory rights as a consumer.
Intellectual property rights
We are the owner or the licensee of all intellectual property rights in our site, and in the material published on it. Those works are protected by copyright laws and treaties around the world. All such rights are reserved.
You may print off one copy, and may download extracts, of any page(s) from our site for your personal reference and you may draw the attention of others within your organisation to material posted on our site.
You must not modify the paper or digital copies of any materials you have printed off or downloaded in any way, and you must not use any illustrations, photographs, video or audio sequences or any graphics separately from any accompanying text.
Our status (and that of any identified contributors) as the authors of material on our site must always be acknowledged.
You must not use any part of the materials on our site for commercial purposes without obtaining a licence to do so from us or our licensors.
If you print off, copy or download any part of our site in breach of these terms of use, your right to use our site will cease immediately and you must, at our option, return or destroy any copies of the materials you have made.

No text or data mining, or web scraping
You shall not conduct, facilitate, authorise or permit any text or data mining or web scraping in relation to our site or any services provided via, or in relation to, our site. This includes using (or permitting, authorising or attempting the use of):
Any "robot", "bot", "spider", "scraper" or other automated device, program, tool, algorithm, code, process or methodology to access, obtain, copy, monitor or republish any portion of the site or any data, content, information or services accessed via the same.
Any automated analytical technique aimed at analysing text and data in digital form to generate information which includes but is not limited to patterns, trends and correlations.
The provisions in this clause should be treated as an express reservation of our rights in this regard, including for the purposes of Article 4(3) of Digital Copyright Directive ((EU) 2019/790).
This clause shall not apply insofar as (but only to the extent that) we are unable to exclude or limit text or data mining or web scraping activity by contract under the laws which are applicable to us.
Our site changes regularly
We do not guarantee that our site, or any content on it, will always be available or be uninterrupted.
We aim to update our site regularly and may change the content at any time. If the need arises, we may suspend access to our site, restrict availability of all or any part of our site for business and operational reasons or close it indefinitely. Any of the material on our site may be out of date at any given time, and we are under no obligation to update such material.
Our liability
The material displayed on our site is provided without any guarantees, conditions or warranties as to its accuracy. To the extent permitted by law, we, and third parties connected to us hereby expressly exclude:
- All conditions, warranties, representations, and other terms which might otherwise be implied by statute, common law or the law of equity that may apply to our site or any content/materials on it.
- Any liability for any direct, indirect or consequential loss or damage incurred by any user in connection with our site or in connection with the use, inability to use, or results of the use of our site, any websites linked to it and any materials posted on it, use or reliance on any content or materials displayed on our site including, without limitation any liability for:
- loss of income or revenue;
- loss of sales or business;
- loss of profits or contracts;
- loss of anticipated savings;
- loss of data;
- loss of goodwill or reputation;
- wasted management or office time;
This does not affect our liability for death or personal injury arising from our negligence, nor our liability for fraudulent misrepresentation or misrepresentation as to a fundamental matter, nor any other liability which cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law.
Nothing in these terms limits your statutory rights as a consumer. To the extent you use the site or membership in the course of a business, we have no liability to you for any loss of profit, loss of business, business interruption or loss of business opportunity, and our total liability to you in connection with the site and membership will not exceed the fees you have paid to us in the twelve months before the event giving rise to the claim.
